The serenity prayer is proclaimed for self-help groups and anonymous alcoholics (AA). It provides peace, light, or hope so that they can change their way of living and move forward.
God puts trials, challenges, and difficulties on our path to learn how to find solutions and overcome or often to accept what we cannot change, with courage, calm, serenity, and wisdom.
We, the children of God, must give thanks to the Lord through prayer for always giving us one more day of life. This prayer, if we say it with our Father’s heart, we can be sure that he will always listen to us and will never let us down.
That is why we must not run away or give up because, with God, everything can be overcome, and we can overcome everything. He cares for us and gives us the strength every day to see ourselves in the mirror and say, yes, we can, that if we change, we will have more wisdom as well as serenity to be successful.
Through this prayer of serenity, we can realize that these are beautiful words, which give us the strength and the objectives to overcome every stressful adversity.
God, give me grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.
Why do AA centers use this prayer?
The serenity prayer gives help to detoxification centers because faith can provide a person the support to overcome it. And the prayer offers them the strength not to give up and go forward for them, for friends or family, gives them the courage to follow the will of the Lord.
The people who attend these groups, many of them need much support. The moment of prayer gives them the strength to accept their mistakes, wisdom, serenity, and hope to change themselves. God created us to fight for what we want, to stand up, and to continue fulfilling our goals in life because this prayer has a unique meaning, that of being better.
Although the word serenity sounds to some, impossible to reach, the reality is different because our Father does not put any proof that we cannot meet. So he will always give the strength for people to leave these rehabilitation centers as well as for any need we present in life.
This prayer of serenity often helps many needy people to change their behavior, as well as to assist the various centers established around the world to achieve their goals better.
